Urban Camouflage Art
Artist Joshua Callaghan has created a series of public art projects in Los Angeles, in which he places digitally printed adhesive vinyl on urban eyesores, such as electrical boxes. The graphics depict the scene that’s hidden behind the object, effectively “cloaking” the subject. The vinyl is permanently affixed and coated with a special chemical to prevent the occurrence of another urban eyesore, graffiti.

these should be EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!
these are awesome- thank you joshua!

Only works in places that are sunny all the time. They wouldn’t camouflage so well if there was snow!!
But that’s a really neat idea.
I think if some of them were taken at different angles for the pictures, they would have had a better effect. But they are absolutely fantastic!

How come graffiti is an eyesore? Those people may say that these are eyesores.
Did you think about birds?
People with low vision? (Who tend to
use bus stops, BTW.)
Low light? bike riders.
These will kill animals and people.
We have some of these in Vancouver.
not quite as cool - ours are covered in rhododendrons where there are no roddies lol and canadian patriot style stuff with various canadian icons (ie: maple leaves..) these are way cooler than ours.
You know, people could walk right into those.
love it!!!!! want to see them where i live
My eyes!!!!
L.A. is that fake
Sweet….your welcome to my town anytime and gee, you can stay at my place for free
—-thanks for sharing
i did this to my car and got hit like 100 times.
Freakin awesome. That is all I have to say. Well other than these few points ;):
Jim seems to be a really positive guy. Keep up the good spirits Jim!
Also, It seems amazing that someone actually got these to work! I’m sure it would take incredible skill and some good proportional math skills too!
And on an end note - how cool would it be to do this to the front of your house?!?!?!
Great Pictures. Thanks!
these are clever, but dangerous unfortunately… would be so easy to walk into one of these in the daytime, let alone in the middle of the night! A good idea but needs more thought. The ones with a picture of a lake on are probably more likely to be safe AND attractive - i.e. a nice picture that blends with the environment but is not identical TO the environment will stop these being eyesores but also stop people/birds/animals etc. walking into them.
Also, I don’t quite see the point of covering up one eyesore with another, i.e. covering an ugly box with an ugly a picture of the road/posts that are behind it. Carefully chosen, pleasant photos would work much better here - ones that fit in with the area but are not simply - lets face it - crude camouflage that only works from certain angles.
Quite an awesome little project.
Honestly though, your opinion of graffiti is quite narrow minded. But then, I guess, we’re all allowed our prejudice. It just saddens me that people still hold their own.
lol @ MATT
cloths that blend you into the road stuff this lol :0D
I really like it but can also see a slightly dangerous side to it ! Nice idea. Thanks for the article argikon :0)
Those would look way better with big drippy tags on them
Hey Delancy, I doubt he`s referring to those incredible works you occasionally come across… he’s talking about tagging and shit that looks like this:

I don’t know about the utility boxes in your city, but mine look like the one in the link above.
I’ve seen this stuff a few times before, but ya know, I don’t seem to ever get over how cool it is. I look forward to one day seeing it on my street.
