Greek Fireworks Battle

Easter on the small Greek island of Chios means one thing – a massive fireworks battle, with over 50,000 rockets raining down on two small towns. Sponsored by rival churches, the object of this is to hit the other church’s bell. The tradition started in the 1800′s during the Ottoman occupation when the Greeks had their cannons confiscated. They responded by launching their own homemade rockets against the Ottoman Turks.
